The Things We Do

Our job is to encourage people to be creative through the language arts. We have a record of over 22 000 performances, courses and workshops.
We work with businesses, all sections of the community, and travel extensively in Europe to produce plays, theatre, poetry and artwork.
Word And Action runs various projects, ranging from the setting up of a learning disabled theatre company to the running of a local summer playscheme. We have worked with around one million people.
We specialise in Instant Theatre — a concept devised by members of the company — and also run creative language workshops and courses. Our visits are part of the syllabus in many European schools.
We publish SOUTH, a poetry anthology giving a voice to writers in the South of England. We also perform at least two scripted works a year through Wanda Theatre.

The Philosophy

The company operates on a well-defined philosophy, which provides the basis of all activities and company organisation.

· Structure dictates content. We will only work in the round: with the audience seated on all 4 sides of the acting area.
· Personal responsibility is essential for growth.
· Communication starts when you listen and accept. Our work is non-judgmental.
· Decisions are not made on the basis of the majority.

Who we are

Word And Action are leading practitioners of theatre in the round. We have worked as a co-operative since 1972. We do not interview for new members. We have an open door policy with an intensive in-house training programme. All our members are asked to be vegetarian, non-smoking and non drug-taking.
