Grants

A boost for the company in 2000 was the award of two lottery grants:

· £16,000 was awarded by London Arts Board through the Regional Arts Lottery Programme to set up a learning disabled theatre company in north London.
· The second grant comprised £11,000 from the New Opportunities Fund to run a summer playscheme in Ferndown for children aged 8-12 — part of a three year project.
· For the second year running, the Earth Love fund awarded the company a grant to run environmental workshops - 'Jungle Fever' - in local schools.
· The Bournemouth Arts Grant provided 3 schools with the opportunity of more environmental workshops.

Tours

Word and Action spent 35 weeks of the year touring Instant Theatre — a unique form of participatory theatre in which the audience become the authors and actors of their own play — to 12 different countries, from Sicily to Finland to Scotland. Over one million people have participated in 22,000 performances since 1972.

Poetry in the South

To celebrate National Poetry Day, Word and Action held three simultaneous events in Wimborne, Ferndown and Christchurch. This also included performances of a set of poems including Wordsworth's 'Immortality'. In the summer Word and Action organised three local poetry fairs.
Another seven issue cycle of Wanda publications' poetry journal 'South' was launched on the Isle of Wight in November and this was preceded by a reading in Portsmouth.

Writing and Theatre

'Aries: Taylor Wakes Up', the first in a series of twelve zodiac plays 'The Blacksmith's Bride', was performed locally in June. In the same month Westbourne's Nightingale House hosted another series of 10 weekly writing workshops with adults with mental health problems.

Workshops

A day's issue based workshop on sexual health, at Twynham school, led to Word And Action being awarded the Osiris Prize for Secondary Education. The company have recently completed workshops at six conferences across the country.
Also an annual day's workshop at Warwick University — where Word and Action offer an 'introduction to community theatre ' as part of Theatre Studies BA (Hons), Ealing Health Authority — a day workshop with Clinicians in Management; plus a kite making workshop at Christchurch Community Day.

Festivals and Events

Word and Action are co-founders of the Round Festival and this year's, the tenth, was held in Worcester. The company ran a two day workshop with professionals, who work with people with memory loss. They also performed at the Larmer Tree Music Festival and Gaunts House Summer Gathering offering performance and graffiti boards, together with a Wishing Tree.
A week long CWS project produced a play on co-operation with pupils at Hamworthy Middle School.
